Cyprus Astronomical Calendar
Seasonal visibility and best observing periods
Spring (Mar-May)
Galaxy season. Virgo Cluster, Leo Triplet, M81/M82 at optimal positions. Milky Way core rises pre-dawn. Mild temperatures ideal for long sessions.
Summer (Jun-Aug)
Milky Way core overhead. Sagittarius, Scorpius nebulae at zenith. Short nights but warm, stable conditions. Peak Perseid meteor shower in August.
Autumn (Sep-Nov)
Andromeda Galaxy at prime position. Longer nights return. Excellent seeing as summer thermals subside. Cygnus and Northern Cross prominent.
Winter (Dec-Feb)
Orion, Taurus, Gemini dominate. Long nights, cooler Troodos temperatures. Geminid meteors in December. Occasional rain at lower elevations.
Why Cyprus for Astronomy?
Cyprus offers exceptional conditions for astronomical observation due to its geographic and climatic advantages:
320+ clear nights annually – Mediterranean climate provides one of Europe’s highest clear sky frequencies. Summer months average 95% clear nights.
Low humidity at altitude – Troodos Mountains rise above the marine layer, providing dry, transparent skies with minimal atmospheric scattering.
Latitude 35N advantage – Southern position allows observation of objects inaccessible from Nordic latitudes, including Omega Centauri, Centaurus A, and southern Milky Way regions.
Stable atmospheric seeing – Island location minimizes jet stream effects. Average seeing 1.5-2.0 arcseconds, occasionally sub-arcsecond at Troodos.
